Welcome to the new Tom Longboat section, we hope to share some activities and provide some fascinating facts about one of the greatest runners to ever race.

October 29th 2008, a private members bill was introduced to the House of Commons to proclaim June 4th of each year Tom Longboat Day

Tom Longboat Awards - Aboriginal Sport Circle

Each year,the Aboriginal Sport Circlerecognizes the achievements of gifted Aboriginal athletes by selectingthe top male and female Aboriginal athlete from each province/territory for the Tom Longboat Regional Awards. These regional recipients automatically advance as nominees for the prestigious National Award that is presented to the most outstanding male and female Aboriginal Athlete in Canada.

National recipients will receive the following:

  1. An all-expenses paid trip to receive the award;
  2. A commemorative Tom Longboat Award medallion;
  3. A custom-made Tom Longboat Award ring;
  4. A cash bursary of $500; and
  5. Their name will beengraved on the Tom Longboat Trophy on display at Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame.

Canada Sports Hall of Fame

Tom Longboat - Six Nations

Tom was born and raised on the Six Nations of the Grand River reserve near Caledonia, ON; the Six Nations' council website has information on past events and truly honours Tom's legacy.

Toronto Island Run

Every year, the Toronto Island hosts a traditional fun run for families and running enthusiasts alike, with this years event taking place September 11th 2011.

Longboat RoadRunners

The Longboat Roadrunners club is among the top running clubs in and around the GTA. We currently have a membership of 120+ runners covering a wide range of age and ability. Longboat was devoted to promoting sportsmanship and dedication to racing and we continue to share in this legacy.

Getting a child excited about runningis half the battle in getting her to actually do the running. Whether your child is self-motivated to lace up her shoes and do laps around the neighborhood or you are finding yourself dragging her to the track a few times a month, having a few running-based activities can help make the experience more effective and enjoyable for both of you.
